Before you start planting or building, you must read the land. Site assessment means carefully observing your property to understand its natural patterns — where the sun shines, where water flows, what the soil is like, and where the wind blows. In Thailand, understanding your local microclimate is especially important because of the distinct hot, rainy, and cool seasons.

Prepositions of place tell us where something is. Common prepositions include: on, in, near, next to, between, under, above, behind, in front of. When describing a permaculture site, we use these constantly.

Map the Sun Path

Track where the sun rises and sets on your land. In Thailand, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, but the angle changes with the seasons. South-facing areas get the most sun.

Pick up a handful of soil. Squeeze it. Sandy soil falls apart. Clay soil holds shape. Loam (ideal soil) holds shape but crumbles when poked.

Wind affects plant growth and building placement. In Thailand, the southwest monsoon (May–October) brings rain, and the northeast monsoon (November–February) brings cool, dry air.

Draw your property to scale on paper. Mark existing features: buildings, trees, water sources, paths, slopes. This becomes your design base map.
